Alaska was officially admitted the 49th state of the United States of America in 1959. Alaska is the largest state in the country, stretching across 570,374 square miles. Separated from the other 48 contiguous states by Canada, Alaska is in North America, but does not share a border with the United States. Alaska is surrounded by water on three sides. Alaska, with its numerous islands, has nearly 34,000 miles (54,700 km) of tidal shoreline. Alaska is the least-connected state in terms of its roadways. The state's road system covers a relatively small area of the state. Most of the cities and villages in Alaska are only accessible by sea or air. Thus, Alaska has developed an efficient and extensive ferry system to serve many areas that roads can not access. In addition, Alaska’s advanced Bush air services provide transportation to areas only accessible by air travel. Dog sledding is another form of transportation available in Alaska. It was once a viable method to deliver medicines and supplies to hard to reach areas. Today, it is more common as an Alaskan pastime, and is the state sport. Alaska is a beautiful country teeming with natural habitants and exotic plant and animal life. Much of Alaska is managed by the government as national parks, national wildlife refugees and national forests.
