South Dakota is located in the high plains of the northern Midwest. South Dakota is home to the largest indoor, naturally heated, swimming pool in the world, Evans Plunge. The pool is heated from natural mineral springs in Hot Springs. The state also houses the deepest Gold Mine in the country, the Homestake Gold Mine, which plunges 8,000 feet straight down. In order to avoid rivalry between the two Dakotas (North and South) both were admitted into the Union on the same day, November 2, 1889, and it was never recorded into history which state’s proclamation was signed first.
