The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (commonly known simply as Rhode Island) is geographically the smallest state in the United States, but has the longest official name. The name Rhode Island is misleading, since most of the state is actually part of the mainland United States. It is commonly referred to as the “Ocean State” due to a prominent naval history and the fact that every point in the state is within 30 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. There are more than 30 islands within the Bay of Rhode Island.
