Arizona is a Southwestern state with a variety of topographical features from deserts to mountains and plateaus. Arizona’s Grand Canyon receives international fame as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The Colorado River carved the deep, colorful canyon through millions of years of running through the channel. It ranges in width from 4 to 18 and runs more than a mile deep into the center of the earth. Nearly 2 billion years of the Earth's history has been exposed as the Colorado River cut through layer after layer of sediment.

Arizona has a long history of automobile racing. The first Cactus Derby recorded by the American Automobile Club, and sponsored by the Maricopa Auto Club and the Arizona Republican newspaper, was the November 1908 Road Race from Los Angeles to Phoenix. Calling it a "road race" was extremely generous, considering most of the early roads from Arizona to California were rutted wagon trails used mostly by stagecoaches and supply wagons. Normally dry desert washes had to be crossed, quicksand had to be avoided and the cars had to be ferried across the unbridged Colorado River, which marked the boundary between California and Arizona. |
