West Virginia’s capital city is Charleston. The state of West Virginia has an interesting history, it broke away from Virginia during the American Civil War (Virginia was pro-slavery, and West Virginia strongly anti-slavery). The state is best known for its coal mining heritage, especially its union organizing battles. It is a beautiful, stark land; most West Virginians affectionately describe it as “almost heaven.” Nearly 75% of West Virginia is covered by forests. West Virginia has the distinction of having the oldest population of any state. The median age is 40.
