New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the United States. Its history in this nation begins in colonial times; New Jersey was one of the thirteen colonies that rebelled against British rule during the American Revolution. New Jersey is roughly divided into three geographic regions: North Jersey, Central Jersey, and South Jersey. North Jersey is economically and culturally tied to New York City, with many of its residents commuting into the city for work. Central Jersey is a generally suburban area, while South Jersey is within Philadelphia's general sphere of influence. New Jersey is also the most racially, ethnically, and religiously diverse state in the union. While Newark and Camden are two of the poorest cities in America, New Jersey as a whole has the highest median household income in the nation, as well as the second highest per capita income. This is largely due to the fact that so much of New Jersey is comprised of affluent suburbs of New York City and Philadelphia.
