Louisiana has a unique cultural heritage, due to its history as a French colony. It is the only state whose legal system is based on Roman, Spanish, and French civil law as opposed to English common law. It is known as "Civil Law," or the "Civilian System." Louisiana’s French influence is also evident in the language, cuisine, and cultural customs. The Mississippi River, coastal areas and swamp areas compose a large portion of the state. Woodlands, prairies and uplands are also present in the state.
