New York is located in the Northeastern United States. New York City dominates the economy of the state; it is the primary center of banking, finance and communication in the United States and is the location of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). New York has the second highest gross national product in the country (California has the first by a small margin). Although best known for New York City's urban atmosphere, especially Manhattan's mountainous skyscrapers, the rest of the state is dominated by farms, forests, rivers, mountains, and lakes (often called “Upstate” to distinguish it from the liberal, urban megalopolis).
