Maryland’s history begins before the U.S. Constitution; it was one of the original thirteen colonies which revolted against British rule. Maryland has a variety of climates, ranging from a humid subtropical climate of hot summers and mild winters (in the Eastern Shore region, as well as a small part of the western shore) to warm summers and cold winters where snow often falls (along the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and the Piedmont region). Extreme western Maryland has a mountain climate, characterized by hot summers and cold winters.
