Arkansas is home to a scenic mixture of mountains and valleys, thick forests and fertile plains. The Ozark and Ouachita mountain ranges in northern and western Arkansas are known as the Highlands; the southern and eastern parts of Arkansas are called the Lowlands (more commonly referred to as the Delta and Grand Prairie). The caves, hot springs and natural parks which abound in the state have given rise to Arkansas’ nickname, “The Natural State.” The capital city, also the largest, is Little Rock.
