The more you pay for a car, the more the dealership makes from the sale. With this in mind, there are some easy ways to prepare yourself for a conversation with a car salesman before negotiating a deal.
Appear Knowledgeable
Know what the dealer paid for the car. The dealer's price is lower than the Sticker Price, and you should walk into the dealership armed with this knowledge. You can find reliable pricing information for most types of cars on the Internet; and there are some premium services, such as CarSmart, which provide consumers with exact pricing information for a small fee (some banks, if you negotiate a loan through them, will provide this information for you as well).
Plan To Negotiate On a Price
When you approach a seller, you should be of a mindset to negotiate on a price. A good rule of thumb is to negotiate up from the Dealer's price, instead of down from the Sticker Price. If you have a car to trade in, do not mention this until after you have settled on a price.
Make it clear to the dealer that you're interested in getting the best price on the new car; anything to do with the trade-in can be negotiated afterward.
